Mobile Regional Airport Guide

All about Moble Airport, Mobile Regional Airport

The Wright Brothers had the right thinking when they made the first flight. From that particular point in time, flying became the fastest and most efficient method to get people and goods from one place to the other.  All over the world, planes shuttle from one location to the other in pursuit of getting people or goods delivered in time to the places they are needed most. It is not hard to find a city of very small population with over three airports. People have fully embraced flying as their choice for transport therefore making it one of the most popular methods for transport.

To effectively support flying, there has to be enough airports that will support both incoming and outgoing planes. Airports are very expensive to construct and most are owned by Governments and military departments in many countries around the world. In fact, depending on a country’s financial muscle, there are some countries in the world whose total number of airports do not exceed five. There are still others whose total number of airports is uncountable. What really matters in the number of airports in a given country is the number of population, the financial muscle and also the economic activities of that area.

In Mobile County in Alabama, there exists an airport called Mobile Airport. It is a military and public  joint owned airport that is situated at the west side of the C.B.D of Mobile County. This airport is operated and owned by the Airport Authority of Mobile County and all it;s operations are independent and self funded. In fact, Mobile Airport does not receive any local dollar taxes. In 2006 alone, a total of over 603,191 people used the airport. By June 2007, the airport was making 50 flights in a day. In terms of acreage, Mobile Airport covers a total of 1, 717 acres (695 hectares). It has a 219 feet elevation above sea level and also two asphalt paved driveways.

The airport supports a number of major carriers. It supports flights from Continental Airline, Delta Airlines, US Airways Express and so many others. A big percentage of the airport’s flights come from the military segment. For instance in the period ending December 2008, 66% of the total flights were from the military. Other segments came with lower flights such as general aviation (21%), air taxi (14%) and scheduled commercial flights taking a 3% share. However, the airport has a reputation of high cost fares. This maybe caused by the lack of a low cost carrier serving the airport.

This airport is not a new entry. In the Second World War, it was used to command the Army Force Base Unit. It used to serve as a pilot training base when it was contracted to Waterman Airlines Inc. It has also been used for a variety of other purposes like glider pilot training. To many people, this airport sounds new but as we can all see, it has been around offering services to the Army and also to the people of the United States of America.
